Bagakhangai–Khushig Valley–Emeelt Railway Set to Open Next Month

Construction on the 214.9 km Bagakhangai–Khushig Valley–Emeelt railway project is moving into its final stages, with operations scheduled to begin next month.

During a Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister of Mongolia N.Uchral directed Minister of Road and Transport B. Delgersaikhan to accelerate the railway’s construction, enhance cross-sector coordination, and ensure integrated management of the project.

Ahead of next month's launch, local authorities and relevant agencies have been instructed to swiftly handle land clearance of lands andd properties for impacted individuals and companies, relocate existing facilities, and re-route or safeguard power transmission lines, distribution networks, and substations along the rail corridor.

Executed in two phases by state-owned Mongolian Railway JSC, the line branches off from Bagakhangai Station, runs through Sergelen and Altanbulag soums in Tuv province, and connects to Emeelt Station.

Phase I (Bagakhangai – Khushig Valley): Construction on the 87.8-kilometer stretch began on April 25, 2025. Earthworks, culverts, and bridge construction across five locations are now 100% complete, while infrastructure works stands at 86.6%.

Phase II (Khushig Valley – Emeelt): Earthworks for the final section connecting Khushig Valley to Emeelt Station are currently at 48.2% completion. 127.1 kilometer long main track of freight and passenger railway section, spanning 177.4 kilometers in total expanded length, along with three passing loops and four railway stations. The construction involves 95 domestic companies and over 4,000 engineers and technical personnel. The line is expected to significantly improve regional freight transport around the capital city and enhance logistical connectivity to key hubs such as Khushig Valley.
